Dan Zumwalt

Force Multiplier, Software Craftsman

Constantly exploring and learning about and evaluating new tools, technologies and strategies for solving software engineering challenges. Today you’ll most often find me working with NodeJS. Tomorrow it may be C# on .NET Core, Go, good ‘ol C++ or some yet-to-catch-on language or framework. I have no affinity to a given tool or language and I’m always tinkering and dreaming up better ways to do "stuff".

Software Engineer II, Microsoft June 2015 – Present

I work across the Microsoft Teams organization identifying opportunities to improve developer productivity and product quality and then lead teams to deliver those solutions. This culminates in an engineering system which provides a low resistance path for engineers to deliver new treatments to our customers safely and confidently. For a better idea of what I do, here are some of my recent projects:

  • - Phased deployment and feature flighting
  • - Deterministic package installation via Yarn & VSTS feeds
  • - Instrumentation of our build, release, and version-control systems

Software Engineer, Microsoft June 2013 – June 2015

Two years experience leading geo-distributed teams to deliver international testing for MSN-powered experiences.

  • - Contributed to shipping MSN apps on Windows 8.1, Windows Phone 8.1, Android, iOS and Amazon Fire
  • - Collaborated with product teams to author global test plans and managed an offshore team of 10+ test engineers
  • - Drove in-country user acceptance testing across a team of 60+ peers
  • - Designed a highly extensible test automation framework which allowed my team to reduce our manual test effort by 80%

Programming Contractor, Alpha Technologies April 2013 – June 2013

Worked as part of a small team to design and build a first-to-market cloud-based cable power supply maintenance management system. In our small and fast-paced team, everyone wore multiple hats. My primary role was to refine and implement a proprietary battery health & runtime estimation algorithm for the website's dashboards views.

Test Engineering Intern, Alpha Technologies February 2012 – April 2013

  • - Developed C program to extract data into Excel resulting in more thorough data analysis
  • - Upgraded existing LabVIEW application to eliminate bugs and add functionality
  • - Added live monitoring to LabVIEW VI for analog voltage and current measurements
  • - Created an interactive Excel report using VBA with extensive automation and security
  • - Managed version control and validated new sources prior to release
  • - Designed VBA macros with a focus on robust error-handling and backwards compatibility
